McConnell-Serio adds another big honor to resume
When Suzie McConnell-Serio led the Seton-LaSalle Lady Rebels to the varsity basketball PIAA State Championship in 1984, she probably didn't dream she would be where she is right now.
McConnell-Serio, 41, now coaches the Duquesne University women's basketball team.
This comes after serving as head coach for 13 years at Oakland Catholic High School, where she won three PIAA state championships.
Recently named by Sports Illustrated magazine as the best 5-feet-4 basketball player of all time, McConnell-Serio holds NCAA records for career assists (1,307), assists in a season (355), and season assist average (11.8) from her time at Penn State.
McConnell-Serio, sister of Chartiers Valley High School head coach Tim McConnell, coached the WNBA's Minnesota Lynx to back-to-back playoff appearances and was named WNBA Coach of the Year in 2004.
Following her collegiate career at Penn State, McConnell won two Olympic medals.
She was a member of the gold medal-winning U.S. women's basketball team in the 1988 Summer Olympics, and earned a bronze medal at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
She also won a gold medal at the 1991 World University Games.
In 1999, Sports Illustrated named her one of the Top 50 Athletes of the Century in the State of Pennsylvania.
