South Fayette wrestlers qualified for State Championships
Wrestling can be a demanding sport.
So when seven wrestlers represented South Fayette School District at the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling (PJW) State Championships held at the Tuillo Arena Convention Center in Erie last month, you could say it was an accomplishment.
In fact, never in the history of South Fayette have so many wrestlers qualified for the State Championships, according to officials there.
When all was said and done, South Fayette had two wrestlers that reached the medal round. Grant Fetchet took eighth place in 12 & under/90 pounds, and J.J. Walker finished in second place in 10 & under/95 pounds.
The other South Fayette wrestlers who qualified for the tournament were Colin Dunn (10 & under/45 pounds); Andrew Spencer (10 and under/45 pounds); Dylan Nock (12 and under/125 pounds); Seth Carr (14 and under/87 pounds); and Tyler Manion (14 and under/102 pounds).
The 2007-2008 wrestling season was another exciting year for the club. The members compiled more than 600 total individual victories.
Right now, the team consists of 43 members ranging from ages 5 through 12. This includes the addition of 21 first-year wrestlers.
The club is part of Western Area Wrestling Association (WAWA), which consists of 18 teams throughout Western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia. This year, there were about 700 youth wrestlers participating in the WAWA tournament.
The club finished second overall in the annual WAWA tournament, which is the highest placing in the club's 32-year history of taking part in the WAWA tournament.
Signups for the 2008-2009 season will be held sometime in September at the South Fayette Municipal Building.
