It is a title that some have worked for four years to achieve.

The wait has ended this year, however, as the Chartiers Valley girls' track team took first place overall in Class AAA Section 6.

"To be exact, 1974 was the last time CV won this title," said Lori Poe, head track coach.

Winning the section title is an exciting milestone for the district as well as a personal reward for this year's seniors.

"They have believed that winning the section was possible since they were freshmen," said Poe, "and now their hard work and dedication have finally paid off."

This year's seniors include sprinters Kaitlyn Black, Mallory Mack and Brittany Meyer, distance runners Melissa Defelice, Abby Passaro, Ashley Slifko and Emily Zeszutek and pole vaulter Brittany Bagnato.

The first big boost of confidence for the Colts this season came during their first section meet against rival Peters Township. CV took the contest by a score of 102-48.

"We lost to Peters in a close one last season," said Poe, "so beating them early this season made us realize we had a good shot."

That initial spark led the Colts to several more section victories throughout the season and a spot competing in the Big 7 Invitational. The tournament, hosted by Peters Township, proved to be an end-of- the-season challenge for CV.

"They (Peters) were really gunning for us," said Poe, "and teams like West Mifflin, Keystone Oaks and Thomas Jefferson also made it a tough competition."

The Colts ultimately left the tournament on another high note, going home with first place.

Although winning the section title is a thrill for the senior class, Colt athletes in lower grades contributed to the successful season, some dealing with injuries.

Freshman Angie Hartz made her presence known during the early-season duel with Peters Township.

"She fell and broke her arm during the 300 hurdles," said Poe, "then got up, finished the race and ran the 200 before she went to the hospital.

"She eventually came back and finished out the season wearing a cast," said Poe.

Several other Colts dealt with injuries throughout the season, but another athlete was always ready to fill in. "We have a lot of talented sophomores and juniors that stepped up when they had to," said Poe. "I think that shows the amount of commitment to the team coming from all classes this year."

The Colts are now gearing up for postseason excitement, hoping to send individual athletes and relay teams as far as possible in the WPIAL qualifiers and championships.

"It's been a great ride this season," said Poe, "and it's nice to see track-and-field athletes in the spotlight."

"We've all enjoyed what we've accomplished and are now looking to continue to get stronger."
